Taken from Joseph Malik’s 2023 ‘Proxima Ebony’ LP, ‘Be A Lion’ captures the feel good positivity of the early Cold Chillin’ hip hop sound and the pioneering female artists, MC Debbie D, Sha Rock and Lisa Lee who appeared in the film, ‘Beat Street’. Kameelah Waheed wrote the original lyrics for ‘Be A Lion’, which encapsulates the B-Girl ethos with her uplifting vocal delivery and fierce flow. She is joined by Edinburgh hip hop DJ legend, Nasty P on kutz, who has performed with Beyoncé, Grandmaster Flash and the Pharcyde. Joseph provides the hypeman backing vocals and the breaks and beats structure of the track.

Joseph Malik became a B-Boy in 1978 and fell in love with hip hop – the music, the breakdancing and the graffiti. When he first heard Biz Markie and Roxanne Shante’s ‘Def Fresh Crew’, Joseph understood the huge contribution that women were making to hip hop history. Fast forwarding to 2020 when Joseph heard Kameelah Waheed on ‘Holding On’, her debut release on Ramrock Red Records. From the moment he heard Kameelah, he knew that he wanted to work with her, and their first collaboration was the 2021 ‘Battle Cry’ taken from ‘Diverse Pt. 3’. Kameelah continued to work with some stellar names within the music industry including Honey Dijon, Terry Farley and Kenny Dope and finally in 2023, she recorded the vocals for ‘Be A Lion’ and the duet with Joseph, ‘My Whole World (is fallin’).

I haven't heard anything as just completely perfectly formed out of the gate--every decision the right one, what to include but more what to exclude--maybe ever. Don't know who Sault is, but they do not sound like they could be anyone who hasn't paid some dues to get this good. Or signed some Satanic contracts. 100% confidence, and it sounds 110% earned.
