Marcus Malone & The Motor City Hustlers
‘Interstate 75’ Album
Ramrock Red Records / RRRLP008

“If you don’t like this, you don’t deserve ears!”, said Craig Charles, when he dropped ‘Can’t Take The Fight’ as his ‘One To Watch’ on his BBC Radio 6 Music Funk and Soul show in January…

Detroit music legend, Marcus Malone and Dan Smith of The Noisettes reveal their awesome new collaborative long player, ‘Interstate 75’, on Ramrock Red Records, loaded with 60’s style Rhythm and Blues, old school Soul and back to the future Funk. Across the album there’s 10 incredible songs loaded with finger snapping beats, hip swaying grooves, infectious brass and raw, soul-drenched vocals, all written and performed with the highest level of musicianship. From the empowering opening track, ‘Ain’t No Telling’ to the groovilicious album title ‘Interstate 75’, and the irresistibly funky ‘Other Side Of The River’, this stunning set of work joins the musical dots between 60’s Stax, Motown and Cadet, along with early 70’s Funk of Sly and The Family Stone and Eugene McDaniels, creating an instantaneous authentic classic vibe.

“I’ve got a future Blues classic on my hands with an indefinable time scale – it could’ve been recorded in the mid 70’s and feels like an instant crate diggers delight!” – Jo Wallace (Ramrock Records)

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan meant that Marcus Malone has always been open to musical diversity. One time member of Mitch Rider’s ‘Detroit Wheels’, he hung out with the MC5, opened for Bog Seger and Iggy Pop before being moved to LA by Ike Turner’s management team, signing with United Artists Records. He released an all-star hard rock ‘Marcus’ album, then signed with Motown Records in LA, producing an all-black original rock band for the label. Marcus quickly made an impact by opening for BB King at the Albert Hall and hit the Euro festival circuit in support of a brace of British label Rock and Blues solo albums. As a member of London's All Star Collective, Marcus worked with Maceo Parker, Jocelyn Brown, Phillip Bailey and Nile Rodgers. A supreme vocal stylist who is equally at home singing Blues/Rock as he is soulfully phrasing heartfelt lyrics, Marcus’ 'Stand Or Fall' LP saw him nominated for Best Recorded Session (2014) and Best Album for ‘A Better Man’ (2017) by European Blues Awards, and he was also nominated by for Best Male Vocalist by the UK Blues Awards (2018).

Marcus Malone and Dan Smith first met at a Blues jam night in Croydon in the early ‘00s, before Dan eventually joined Marcus’ band and subsequently featured on his albums ‘Walking Shoes’ (2002) and ‘Blue Radio’ (2003). Dan also founded the internationally acclaimed group, The Noisettes, with stunning vocalist, Shingai Shoniwa, and together they toured the UK, EU and the USA with the likes of Bloc Party and TV On The Radio. Their hit single, ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm’ (2009), featured on a Mazda TV advert and went on to claim the lofty Number 2 position on the UK charts. Dan has also co-written with the likes of Rita Ora, Jessy J, Olly Murs, Lucy Spraggan and Newton Faulkner.
